It was 1975. I was sure I was pregnant. I already had a one year old son. Back in those days there were no home pregnancy tests. So I went to my doctor. My test came back negative and he prescribed some kind of pills to “start my period”.
I was still convinced I was pregnant, but I took the pills, my period did not start and my doctor did another pregnancy test. Sure enough, I was pregnant.
Approximately eight months later, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, who was born with Spina Bifida. It was a lifetime of doctors, surgeries and sadness. She was also deaf and developmentally disabled.
It wasn’t until many years after her birth, that I paused to wonder if those pills (to restart my period) may have caused her to have any or all of these conditions. I guess I’ll never know.
My sweet Nichole passed away in 2000.
I can’t begin to thank you all for your kind and thoughtful words. There are so many wonderful people in the world. I never expected to get so many views and upvotes. Thank you so much!
